AMD is soon to release the AMD Fusion Family of APUs which is a processing unit which combines the properties of computing and graphical capabilities into a simple, single, form factor. Though it isn't technically one piece, it is much like the design of the PlayStation 3 Cell processor which is a combination of units to form one.
What does this mean? More power and performance; it's that simple.
The new APU will make better use of the ATI Stream Technology which will enhance the capabilities and effectiveness of the stream technology.
ATI Stream is a hardware and software configuration which allows more efficient use between AMD processors and graphic chips. Because the new APU provides a smaller and more effective form factor, processors between the CPU and GPU can occur much quicker; as fast as they already are.
ATI Stream however is restricted to software which support this function, but with the new APUs, not only will they make better use of it, for software that don't support Stream, it would be as though they did.
ATI Stream had opened pathways to OpenCL, thus the APU will only take it to the next level.
Because of the design, developers can now push the processing and graphical capabilities further and reach higher potentials.
OpenCL is an Open Computing Language which will allow developers to harness this new power and make use of the multi-core processors AMD provides.
It looks like both Intel and NVIDIA have a heavy fight on their hands as ATI is starting to roll out the big guns.
